The Hunternet Association
The Hunternet, a galactic organization created to deal with existential threats. Galactic civilizations that were among the lucky few that passed the great filter at the planetary level recognized the potential universe-wide threat that certain advances in technology could bring about. The Hunternet forces are designed for this. To maintain readiness they also hunt down bounties and train in simulated environments. The Hunternet is a non-military force that is neutral during most conflicts but must monitor them. Hunters face difficult choices and wield great power. A single hunter has many times the power of a conventional ship not in terms of raw firepower but in terms of flexibility and advanced tech.
Hunters must be prepared to deal with several threats: EL1 existential level 1 threats, pronounced el-one. EL1 is planet scale. EL2 is a star system. EL3 is multiple star systems within one galaxy EL4 is galactic and EL5 is multiple galaxies. At its founding, the hunter network handled EL1 events. This lead to a large number of space-faring civilizations existing that would have otherwise not passed the great filter.
While the Hunternet organization spent great effort in monitoring these saved civilizations the number of rogue events kept increasing until finally, a calamity precipitated. This lead to a change in the Hunternet charter and now hunters are expressly forbidden to intervene with EL1s. The Earth Federation is one of those civilizations originally saved by the founding charter and this change of course while it has greatly slowed down the rate of incidents has created rifts within the Hunternet.
This is my first pass at the lore of Hunternet. Suggestions and ideas are welcome. The goal is to create a unique setting that is relevant to the challenges we face today. The lore was inspired by the Fermi paradox.
